At Reynella Medical Centre, we believe in the power of a simple question: “Are you OK?”

Each year, R U OK? Day reminds us of the importance of checking in on the people around us – our family, friends, neighbours, colleagues, and even ourselves. It’s a national day of action dedicated to encouraging conversations about mental health and emotional wellbeing. But while the day itself is powerful, the message behind it is one we should carry with us every day.

Mental Health Doesn’t Follow a Calendar

Life has its ups and downs, and mental health challenges don’t wait for an annual awareness day. Stress, anxiety, depression, grief, burnout – these can affect anyone, at any time.

That’s why it’s so important to make asking “Are you OK?” a regular part of how we connect with the people around us. You don’t have to be a mental health professional to make a difference. Just being there, listening without judgement, and showing someone you care can go a long way.

How to Ask, “R U OK?”

Asking the question is important – but so is how you ask, and how you respond. Here are four simple steps recommended by the team at R U OK?:

Ask – Start a genuine conversation. Be relaxed, friendly and concerned.
“Hey, I’ve noticed you’ve seemed a bit different lately – are you OK?”

Listen – Take the time to listen with an open mind. Don’t rush to fix or judge.
“That sounds really tough. I’m so glad you told me.”

Encourage Action – Support them in taking the next steps. This might mean seeing a GP, a psychologist, or accessing support services.
“Have you thought about chatting to someone about this? I can help you find support.”

Check in – Keep the conversation going. A follow-up message or catch-up can mean the world.
“I’ve been thinking about our chat. How are you feeling now?”

What If Someone Isn’t OK?

If someone tells you they’re not OK, know that you don’t have to have all the answers. The most powerful thing you can do is listen, validate their feelings, and encourage them to seek help.

Our team at Reynella Medical Centre is here to support anyone going through a tough time. Our GPs and mental health professionals can help with:

  • Mental Health Care Plans
  • Referrals to psychologists or counsellors
  • Managing stress, anxiety, or depression
  • Medication support, if needed
  • Ongoing check-ins and care coordination

If you’re reading this and you don’t feel OK – please know you’re not alone, and help is available. Whether it’s reaching out to a friend, a loved one, or your GP – speaking up is a strong and important first step.

Mental health matters every day. So let’s not wait for a calendar date to ask, listen, and support one another. A small conversation could change a life.

From all of us at Reynella Medical Centre, we encourage you to make every day a day to check in – with your loved ones, your colleagues, your neighbours, and yourself.

Because you don’t need to be an expert to ask a question – just a good friend and a good listener.
