Mental Health Month: Why Speaking to Your GP is a Vital First Step
October is Mental Health Month—a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and remind ourselves that mental well-being is just as important as physical health. At Reynella Medical Centre, we’re committed to supporting our community through every aspect of health—including mental health.
Mental Health Affects Us All
Whether it’s stress, anxiety, depression, or just feeling overwhelmed, everyone experiences challenges to their mental well-being at some point. The past few years have placed increased pressure on many of us—through isolation, economic stress, and uncertainty about the future. This month, we’re encouraging everyone to check in with themselves and those around them.
The Role of Your GP in Mental Health
Your GP is often the first and most accessible point of contact when it comes to managing your mental health. While people may associate GPs with physical health, we’re trained to assess, support, and manage a wide range of mental health conditions.
Here’s how your GP can help:
- Provide a safe, confidential space to talk
- Diagnose and monitor mental health conditions
- Discuss lifestyle factors that may impact mental health
- Refer you to psychologists, psychiatrists, or counsellors if needed
- Create Mental Health Care Plans that may entitle you to Medicare-subsidised sessions with a psychologist
You don’t need to have a diagnosed condition to speak to your GP. If you’re feeling stressed, low, or simply not like yourself, a conversation can be the first step toward feeling better.
Don’t Wait Until It’s a Crisis
One of the biggest barriers to seeking help is the belief that you have to be “really unwell” to ask for support. This simply isn’t true. Early intervention often leads to better outcomes—and your GP can help you navigate your options.
Even a brief check-in appointment can make a significant difference. We’re here to listen without judgement, provide guidance, and help you take positive steps forward.
How to Get Started
If you or someone you care about is struggling, book an appointment with one of our friendly GPs.
Your mental health matters. Let’s break the stigma—it’s okay to ask for help.
